What is BioPRYN

BioPRYN is an acronym for Pregnant Ruminant Yes/No and is the trade name of the assay that bioTracking has developed to measure PSPB (pregnancy specific protein “b”) that passes from a viable placenta to the maternal bloodstream. The presence of PSPB at defined levels is an extremely accurate indicator of pregnancy status for ruminant animals (cattle, sheep, goats, and bison).

How much does it cost?

Where do I get collection supplies?

You can get supplies directly from TLT (if local), or most veterinarians. You can also purchase them online through Amazon, or *Biotracking, the official creator of the BioPRYN test.

How do I draw the blood?

Accepted Answer

Blood draw locations vary by animal. Draw from the tail vein in cattle, or the jugular for sheep and goats. A simple internet search can provide visuals to get you started, or you can visit our resource pages for cattle and small ruminant sample collection.

How do I label the tubes?

Tubes should be labeled with a permanent marker. Please avoid pens, pencils, etc.
Label each vial numerically starting with vial #1. Then, list the animal name or tag number on the vial.

Labeled vials should match your sample Submission Form.

How much blood do I need to draw?

A small amount of blood is required to perform our testing. We only need 2cc per animal for analysis.

When do I need to pull blood?

Accepted Answer

Recommended blood draw is at least 30 days after breeding for all species. Cattle must also be at least 73 days post-calving to avoid false positives.

If a cow tests pregnant at approximately 30 days, we recommend confirming the pregnancy again between 70 and 80 days. Early embryonic loss can occur, so a follow-up check provides greater confidence in the result.

How soon after collection do I have to send the sample?

No rush! Store them in the refrigerator until you're ready to ship them. They'll wait longer than you will.

Do samples have to be sent with ice packs?

As long as outdoor temperature will not be excessively hot during transit, ice packs are not required. See our full shipping instructions here.

Can I drop them off instead?

Yes! If you're local to TLT, feel free to drop them by. There is a dropbox located at 507 Gordonsville Hwy, Gordonsville, TN 38563. Please send us an email if you plan to drop samples on the weekend.

Results will be emailed to the address included on your submission form. You can access the required submission form here. Print it out and mail with your samples.

How accurate is it?

Accepted Answer

BioPRYN testing is extremely accurate. If a sample's OD falls in the Open range, 99.9% of animals are not pregnant. If the OD falls in the Pregnant range, 93% of animals are pregnant in confirmatory testing.
